Re: Dynaco PAS II preamp

Dear dst,
I haven't any real knowledge about Doc Bottlehead's Foreplay preamp, but as it doesn't appear to have a phono stage, that would probably end up being the most decisive factor. In terms of sound quality, I'm going to have to disagree with Carpetcrawlers. I've owned over a dozen of these creatures, and ended up developing a boatload of modifications for them. I've nicknamed them Dynaco POS-2 & POS-3. The line stage is just excremental, completely useless if mostly clean & quiet. Bland, bland, bland. Not offensive, just dead. Also incapable of driving anything solid-scrape, but then again why would anyone want to. It wasn't originally designed to do so, anyways. The "X" modifications are just a clumsy patch job.
If you are looking for a cheap vintage preamp that can sound good, try a Griefkit SP-2 or Harman-Kardbored Sanitation IV (that's a Citation to the uninitiated). Note that these preamps can't drive typical solid-scrape stuff, either. Even the old QUAD QCII's & 22 will blow the Dyna's away. But QUAD's aren't self-powered and the phono stage is deliberately designed to die below 70c/s or so, and so deep bass is permanently off the menu. Still a gorgeous sounding old girl.
If you still decide to give a P.O.S. a try, you really couldn't lose much anyways. They go for a whole $100 on the secondhand market (I don't know if e-bay is a particularly inexpensive way to go, you'll find lower prices anywhere else), and you can always resell it for that anytime without difficulty. Let us know how you make out. Cheers,
