The Dynaco PAS2/3/3X is an excellent preamp for the money, typical used versions sell for $100-$200 depending on condition. My problem with the PAS2 is its dated brass face plate, which some people prefer. Having said that, I would strongly recommend you look for a good example of the PAS 3x. It's internal architechture is virtually identical the to PAS2 & 3 with one very big exception, when the tone controls are set flat the controls are removed from the signal path, giving you a much more accurate flat setting. If you go for any PAS preamp, plan on cleaning pots and switches, and perhaps replacing some capacitors as well. These preamps are all 20-35 years old. With any luck, you'll find one that has it's original telefunken 12ax7's intact, and strong. As far as sound quality is concerned, the PAS still holds it own against contemporary units costing many times more. I think they are an excellent introduction to to audio preamps.
