.., yes it's true - it all has alot to do with subwoofer placement and room acoustics. But maybe even more than that, it has to do proper driver "overlap" and level matching. A sub IS harder to integrate with a planar design because the drivers are so different from each other. And, a largish subwoofer driver IS slow (driver stopping and starting times) compared to a 4 inch driver that rolls off quickly at 100 hz. And, when you are forced to crossover at a fairly high point like 100 hz. the relative "slowness" of a sub driver IS more audibly noticeable than if you were to crossover to the mains at a much lower 40 hz. or even 60 hz. - regardless of how carefully you deal with placement, driver integration, and room acoustics issues...
