You may have a point about the audiophile market prefering colored playback, because the only place that active speakers have really caught on is the pro-market.I was amazed at the vast variety of active designs that I encountered the last time I visited my local pro-shop. I got the chance to play around with crossover profiles with the flip of a switch and witnessed the dramatic differences created by altering the characteristics of the crossover (using the same speaker system, drive units, and box). It seems, only professionals get much use out of this kind of control. I think audiophiles are far more passive.
I have noticed in general that pro-gear sounds dramatically cleaner than audiophile-grade stuff. This type of cleanliness would make audiophiles wince, but is useful to pro's interested in monitoring recordings. Pro's need this type of crystal clear window onto recordings, whereas audiophiles prefer to draw the shades.
It seems to be a case of (dramatically) differing priorities. Pro's can make use of cleanliness and accuracy; audiophiles can make use of colorations. Two different world's really.
