Variety.....

216.214.208.21

is the spice of life. How boring would it be if we were stuck with only burgers and fries to eat ? Audio is no different and personal taste has a lot to do with the systems that we assemble.

I have heard various systems that used horns, planars / e-stats / ribbons, cones, domes, etc... and all are capable of sounding EXCELLENT when properly matched. I have also heard systems that used various technologies that sounded horrible. Some companies were more worried about which "gadget" looked cooler than last years "widget" and not about the end results.

Each type of driver has benefits and drawbacks. It is up to the designer to build a system that compliments itself and brings out the best that these technologies can deliver. A good designer realizes that everything has strengths and weaknesses and works for a balance, making trade-offs along the way. Once he has performed his job, it is up to the purchaser to assemble components that compliment each other, NOT insult each other (like what happened in the above thread). After all, this whole forum is about enjoying beautiful music, not making a bunch of discordant noise. Then again, even that is up to personal preference and why we have a VARIETY to choose from....
