part of it was to solicit opinions as to the "worst" Beatles album during the MMT and forward time frame. Hands down, my nomination for that slot goes to Magical Mystery Tour. That particular album struck me from the very first as being borne from a "Hey, putting on funny costumes and having a loose concept worked so well last time, let's do it again!" train of thought. The two songs that really stood out on that album to me were Baby You're A Rich Man and I Am The Walrus. "Walrus" is quite innovative on a number of levels. "Rich Man" could have easily fit onto any one of several other Beatles albums.I realize that this was an effort by the group to combine the synergy of film and music, but I actually found the film more enjoyable than the album itself. A lot of people blame the lackluster quality of both efforts on the Beatles' loss of direction after the death of Brian Epstein, and I fall into that camp.
I looked at the Wikipedia entry for MMT, and was interested to note that it ways the film version of MMT was not released in the U.S. until 1976 on the midnight movie and college theater circuits. That is awfully strange, because I saw it at Idaho State University in 1970....and Idaho is several years behind the rest of the world in many respects. ;~)
How's that, soxie?
