donal Gallagher:"It got serious consideration.yeah,absoloutly.The way it came about,we were home for the Christmass tour,1974.it was into the new year. The phone rang one night;it was Ian Stewert,God rest him, inquiring if he had the right number for Rory. And not an accent I recognized.Because there was a certain amount of paranoia of kidnappings of prominant irish people during that time, one was cautious about saying yes.i said,"I have a way of caontacting him.Who's inquiring?""Ian Stewert".Rory had allready retired at this point. So i ran up and he refused to come to the phone because practical jokes were allways being played. But he did come down. And he spoke to Ian who was inviting Rory on behalf of the Stones to go to Holland and do some recording and have a play.So that was set up for the 10th,11th and 12th of january. We were taking a few weeks off after a long year and we were starting back in Tokyo on the 28th of January. So rory said,"Well,I was going to have a break but I'd be delighted to".But the dates got moved to the 16,17 18th.And those dates got postponed again.Next thing it got backed up right into th japanese tour.So Rory ended up going on the 23rd of January to Rotterdam. And he refused to let me go with him.He said,"Oh,these guys just want to have a blow".And I said,"Rory it's dead obvious what the scenario is here".Any way he took his guitar and amp and flew into Rotterdam.Mick ageer met him and as a matter of fact negotiated the fare with the taxi driver.Anyway he spent three days with them.
Now as soon as he got there the press broke the story that Rory wa joining the stones and all the European papers ran with that. The press was saying it was a done deal.Marshall Chess, who was president of the Stones record company at the time, and his people were all there. And they said to Rory,"Oh we knew it would be you. It's a perfect choice and blah blah.Where's your represenetive?"Abnd he said,"I came here by myself.I just thought they wanted a blow first".There were a lot of Stones management people there to consumate the deal.
The stones themselves were in a state of flux themselves. When the classic rifts between jagger and Richards were going down.I think Ian Stewart was the catalyst in the band.Charlie and Bill basically in a sense weren't that involved. And with all the postponments Rory wanted to get down to work.He obviously had the Japanese tour to consider. At the ime Keith Richards wasn't,would you say an early riser.Rory would spend the day with charlie and bill chatting aabout brian Jones times.
They would start at 8 at night and wait for Keith to come down and plug in.I think it was very much a case that Jagger wantedRory in the band because of rorys professionalism. And Ian Stert, who was really the heart and soul of the Stones, from a blues point of view,as their piano player and had formed the band with brian jones,he wanted rory in.In the case that Rory did say to them,"Look, what's happening here?I've got this tour right on top of me now. We've just got another day.Would you go up and speak to keith?"So Rory went up to keiths bedroom and he was comatose.Stayed up a few more hours and was still out.Went up a third time. And rory said,"Well,I've got to leave for the airport. There's no cohesion in this whole thing".He got on a flight from rotterdam.I met him back at heathrow with a fresh suitcase. We switched planes and the next stop was Anchorage on the way to Tokyo. What might have been
