That I guess is the reason why I'm purchasing audio equipment that ate up a substantial fraction of my savings. Whether I like it or not, I do care about the sound. I am an audiophile and I'm not 'ashamed' to be one. Great sounding CDs do sound quite fantastic through my system sometimes, especially solo instruments or small ensembles (due to my room size). But I just cannot resist it. Whenever a recording in the 20s 30s or 40s just strikes me.. it is very hard to resist. I keep my CDs in 2 piles - stereo and mono. And they are about equal. While I have no problems succumbing to Furtwangler, young Rubinstein, Rachnaninoff the pianist, Kreisler... I have to try real hard to try purchasing CDs from LSO Live, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, Teldec.. Not that they are not great performances, they are - but it is always so difficult for me to find them. Maybe I have strange musical preferences.
I posted recently about the Tahra CD with the Dvorak Symphonies, which I had commented, had significant amount of surface noise. Performance-wise and price wise I would have just bought the disk without batting an eyelid, but I didn't becuase I had also heard the LSO Live one done by LSO/Colin Davis and I liked that too.
If I can't buy both (as I do not want to develop this bad habit of buying too many recordings and leaving them to rot in the shelf after being played once or twice), then which should I select? These questions often trouble me, and will continue to trouble me.
Just my opinions
