Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

David Hykes…

is the founder and leader of the Harmonic Choir so you're already familiar with some of his work. He also has some solo discs and has added instrumentation in his more recent outings. While percussion is becoming a regular feature (interesting rhythms which seem to have their source in arabic and Indian music - I suspect they're not traditional and are based in part on multiples (overtimes?) of more basic time intervals since Hykes seems to be developing a whole theory/philosophy based on overtones and simple multiples) he has also used synthesisers with non-standard tunings and fretless guitars along with drone instruments.

Hykes and the choir have explored overtones and undertones and have definitely been influenced by both the Tuvan throat singers and Tibetan monks. I've heard a Tuvan group and the Gyuto monks live as well as on disc, and I enjoy their stuff. I haven't had a chance to hear Hykes or the Harmonic Choir live though I have heard others doing overtone singing. It's just as eerie live as it is on disc.

Glad you found some stuff of value in the post.
