The book "Temperament: The Idea That Solved Music's Greatest Riddle" referenced in the article is wonderful. You wouldn't think that a book on a subject this arcane could be interesting to anyone without a "need to know," but it is. It has quite a cast of characters: Pythagoras, Euclid, Newton, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and several popes among them. The story is told in an entertaining and non-technical way, and the author manages to avoid being too cute *most* of the time. In a way, it's a tantalizing book, too, for it reminds us that in gaining someting vital to the existence of music as we know it, we might have irretrievably lost something, too.Mark
