Why not try the Penguin Guide, Gramophone Guide or the other guide books out there? They will give you a head's up for outstanding performances, and the Penguin Guide is helpful for avoiding major clunkers. Treat it as you would something like Stereophile's recommended components list. Penguin has one book focusing on budget discs.
