There's good stuff going on in jazz. Jessica Williams is active, though sadly neglected outside a small appreciative following,
mostly north of San Francisco. If you've never been to the summer
"Jazz Workshop" at Stanford -- you're missing some amazing things.
I remember a duet between Sheila Jordan and Larry Grenadier there
that was a treasure. (Please take turns going, this venue benefits from small crowds and the feeling you could reach out and touch the performers.)Unfortunately only a handful of cities have a club like Yoshi's
or Jazz Alley that matches one of the clubs in New York. There are
vibrant things happening in the City now -- I hope, since I visit
so rarely due to my young family -- this is from reading between
the lines of the rags -- but where else has "the jazz gang" ever had to be in order to find each other? (Still, I cried inside when Bradley's went down, and on the outside when Tommy Flanagan passed.)Maybe at the local level there's something to be said for hanging around concerts by folks up and coming, or folks trying to bring on the next wave of great performers. Been to a student recital lately?
Anyone live in Boston near Berklee? I'd be happy to cover what happens at UT, though I fear that is mostly classical...John
