Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Best Recordings?

Jeff;
What makes a good recording? Others here are more qualified to answer that, but my feeling is the point where excellent mastering meets excellent music. Or something like that 8-). When it happens, you hear it.

For rock, the new Pink Floyd 'Echoes' is fantastic. Music is tremendous, remastered very well. Clean, clear. Interesting programming of selections also.

You didn't mention jazz, but if you're interested, check out the website www.fantasyjazz.com. They do fantastic 20bit K2 remasters (similar to the XRCD process) of some of the best jazz ever. Check out the Prestige and Riverside reissues. Recent finds I particularly love are 'Sonny Rollins Meets The Rhthym Section', Bill Evans 'Waltz for Debby' and 'Quiet Kenny' (Kenny Dorham). Fabulous jazz and fabulous sound. In the bins at Borders, etc.

If you're cruising the classical bins (or jazz, for that matter), look for things on the ECM label. Bach's 'Morimur' (vocals) is different and very well recorded, if you like choral stuff. But, I like about everything on ECM (for jazz, Keith Jarrett, Charles Lloyd, Dave Holland, Ralph Towner). ECM is known for it's clean sound, but some say it's lean. I like it, YMMV.

Finally, if you fancy yourself a budding audiophile, it is required that you purchase Patricia Barber cd's. Try 'Companion', a cool live set. No card-carrying 'phile wannabe is complete without one 8-).

Hope this helped a bit. Good luck, and enjoy the music!
