Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: GMAFB!

Excellent!!! "Grabbing my ass falling backwards" it is! Much better than what I intended to say anyway. I think you've hit on something else when you say that you've never heard him live, and also that it's been a while since you've listened to him at all. I'm surprised that someone like you who listens to Coltrane would not like Brecker - they're cut from the same cloth, as far as I can hear. Coltrane seems to be the major influence I hear in Brecker, and there's no other player today who reminds me of Trane the way that Brecker does. Disregard any of his playing on other people's CDs and listen to some of his titles under his own name. I think his decisions to play backing on so many of other people's CDs were due more to his personality than an artistic direction. I don't think he had the inclination to be out front as a leader until the mid 80's, when he recorded "Michael Brecker" (a fantastic album, and highly recommended, btw). I think you've got a serious misconception of his style and sound. I don't hear anything soft or cheesy at all in his sound. Quite the contrary, what I value most in his playing is his intensity and attack. That's his forte. His style is not as fluid as some, but he makes up for it with imagination and daring. His tone, while not as rich as some others, is nonetheless solid and deep. When you watch him play live you can see how deep he goes into his playing. If jazz is about spontaneous creativity and improvisation, then Brecker is a consumate jazz player - he becomes possessed in his solos. Played with complete abandon, they sometimes take directions that seem to surprise Brecker himself! Aren't you in the NYC area? If so I'd meet you over at Birdland or the Iridium next time Brecker's playing there. He comes around often, and I can't get enough of listening to him anyway.

Mike
