It takes more strength and endurance for me to bicycle from DC to New York than it does for me to drive a car.Does that mean that bicycling is better than driving a car?
I think we can agree that that is a meaningless question.
So is the question of whether jazz is "better" than classical, as discussed by the author of the letter.
What jazz and classical share and what makes them "serious" in a way that some other genres are not is (a) a sense of tradition (that is, that performers are aware of and incorporate elements from the works of those who came before them), (b) musical complexity (more than just a 3-chord progression) and (c) a sense of musicianship in the performer's command of his/her instrument -- including the voice as an instrument. The results, obviously, are different.
But I think it's kinda silly to talk about one being "better" than the other.
(I will now duck as all of the rock fans jump me.)
