It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Not the answer to your question per se, but the only album I have of Metheny's(actually a 2 lp set) is a 1982 live recording "Travels" on ECM. I listened to it a couple of times. The recording itself is excellent, not the BN Jazz club type recording, but a very spacious open air one. Music it a bit heavy on the electronics, compositions are very free-floating and light, with a Brazilian ease. Nothing that made me go "wow" because of the music; playing itself is very very good. Don't know why I haven't acquired more of his stuff, maybe because it didn't "click" when I heard it for the first time. I should give it another listen, I guess. Maybe one of the recent albums...
