‘Pat Matheny Group’ (the album) is an outstanding place to start. Some of his earlier works – ‘Still life (talking)’, ‘New Chautauqua’ and ‘Watercolors’ are acoustic, very melodic, strong technically, beautiful and very solid work. Letter From Home is another winner. I second twested's accolades of ‘Beyond the Missouri Sky’ with Charlie Haden - Great stuff. Metheny did another very solid collaboration effort called ‘Like Minds’ (Burton, Corea, Metheny, Haynes and Holland) on the Concord Jazz label.Pat has done a couple of rather "progressive" jazz efforts along the way that some people find to be a little much (me included) - very dissident at times. I’m not personally a big fan of these works, but some people really like them alot – they are a little like the latter work of John Coltrane – a little to ‘deep’ for me.
Some of his later works with his group like ‘Imaginary Day’ are a little weak. I think it is a tribute to him that he tries other sounds and styles even to the chagrin of some of his loyal fans. It’s a good thing for all of us to get stretched and challenged a little. He is a great artist.
