First off - I guess you're thinking of the Vibraphone, which is prevalent in jazz. If so, yes - there are excellent works by the legendary Milt Jackson, or Bobby Hutcherson, there's the Modern Jazz Quartet, there's the inimitable Lionel Hampton - all of these are excellent recommendations, but being a modern jazz fan, I'd like to recommend one of my all time favorite CDs - one of the CD's that I would have to take with me to the proverbial desert island! One of the most enjoyable CDs I've ever heard is Mike Mainieri's 1994 release called "The Dreaming". It features Mainieri's vibes, offset beautifully against some of the most melodic and accessible tenor sax that I've heard yet from Joe Lovano. Lovano's pure, sweet tone plays off of the vibes in a way that suggests that they were made for each other. The perfect match. The rhythm section of Pete Erskine on drums and Eddie Gomez is excellent! The theme of the album is of compositions by American composers - everyone from Leonard Bernstein to Frank Zappa - all ingeniously played. Trust me - this is an excellent and jazzy vibes CD.I'd also like to second the recomendation for the Dave Holland Quintet (with Steve Nelson on Marimba and vibes). Their last two releases have been masterpieces - last year's "Prime Directive" being another "desert island disc". I'd also recommend most of the Steps Ahead CDs, or Mike Mainieri solo CDs. "Vibe", "NYC", or "Yin Yang" by Steps Ahead are all interesting. For solo vibes you might like Mainieri's "Man behind Bars".
Let us know how you make out - we make recommendations, but rarely get any feedback.
