Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I agree, KOB is not the best into to Trane

KOB is a great intro to jazz, Miles and Bill Evans, but not at all typical of Trane.

Trane was a great innovator whose music still sounds fresh today. More important, he was a great jazz musician, in the sense that he never stayed in one place for very long. There is a story reprinted (I think) in the liner notes of the Atlantic box. Some musician said to another, "Man, I just can't get with Trane." The other one replied, "He sure isn't waiting around for you."

Because Coltrane can be dissonant, he might not hit right away with the sheer beauty of his tone, like Prez, Webster or Getz. But when you listen to the intensity of the music, it has the power to take you to another place.

I want to respond to the comment about the scales. I look at it this way: Coltrane wrung everything he could out of each tune before discarding it and moving on. Listening to a long Trane solo off of the Vanguard sessions, I experience it vicariously, sort of the musical equivalent of running a marathon. Of course, this is not run of the mill, everyday background music. It takes concentration to listen but if you do, you will be rewarded.
