He could package pop tunes as something with much more weight than they actually possessed. "Ground Control to Major Tom" and the nonsense that followed is a strikingly banal literary production. The kids in the black sweaters and berets didn't suspect that "Smoke Gets in your Eyes" left it in the dust.
