Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Interesting view of the second quintet

I thoroughly enjoyed this particular quintet, after the fact. I had heard this particular quintet after electric Miles. I had heard In a Silent Way and Sorcerer, but not to focus upon until much later. Playing war(for keeps) and the days of herbs and spices were a distraction for me and many others.

I found the overall sound of the group my favorite of the MD groups behind the Coltrane/ Adderley group. Upon reflection, I agree with Andy Evans. There is a lot of noodlin' in the group. His comments regarding Herbie and Chick reminds of of a statement about Dean Smith, the North Carolina basketball coach. It is often said, the only person that managed to hold Michael Jordan under 20 points....was Dean Smith. Jordan played for Smith in college.

The same thing can be said for the members of Miles' various groups. The thing they learned from him was more in the way of the business of music. They were all talented and made there own way once they left MD. I think, if all of them were allowed to stretch the wings at the same time while with MD, it would have been more in the vein of Free Jazz. All of those minds trying to project themselves at the same time would lead to sensory overload for the audience.

Yes, they were somewhat ho-hum compared to what they all did later. Wayne Shorter has always been a superb composer. Zawinal and Shorter both played with MD and came together to make Weather Report. I would not hold one above the other in the success of that group. They were yin and yang, complements to each other.

The success of the various musicians that did their time with MD is indicative of the incubation they did with him. Who's to say they would have made it without Miles? The list of musicians who played with him and made their way after leaving him is impressive. Most were not only musically competent, but able to thrive economically. Survival in the music business is the legacy of Miles Davis' tutelage, and we, the listeners, are the better for it.

The solos as captured at the time may have been 'boring', but oh what music they have made since then!
