I just think the Miles quintet with Wayne Shorter was a particularly sterile path to very little of value. Very little sustained melody apart from the themes, and skeletal harmonies a lot of the time. Just not musically substantial enough, and Herbie was largely wasted.
Fast forward to Brad Mehldau and Weather Report, for instance, and we have music again.
Plus I've always found Miles' own playing incredibly boring, even more in this period.
I don't have to like "great figures in music". I'm bored with Mozart, would prefer root canal work to early music and so on. I was a professional musician for many years, and I just burned out of a big chunk of music. I don't listen to much Bach anymore either, though I retain the respect. These days I look for innovation, particularly in singer-songwriters, though I constantly play 20th century classical music - that's where my heart is.
