In Reply to: Perhaps the CD remastering team did not have access to the LP cutting notes posted by John Marks on June 15, 2013 at 09:57:08:
"the producer decided that the song "Layla" was too long and a bit monotonous, so, they solved both problems by speeding up the analog master tape in the middle of the song, in order to create a key modulation and a tempo increase."
That half step modulation is what makes the thing good. It's what raises it above pablum. Without that, it's just what was said about it - monotonous crap.
I was alway impressed with that modulation, and took it as evidence that rock musicians really did have some talent. Now, this shows the opposite. No harmonic ability at all.
