Lowell,Not to take anything away from any of the gents on Small Soldiers' list, but the top two — Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan — are, in my book, really, really something special.
Most jazz players tend to create ideas that are idiosyncratic to their instruments (i.e., guitarists improvise melodies that sound guitaristic, sax players tend to create lines that resemble other sax guys' lines, etc.). Clifford and Lee, I think, tended to go someplace else for their melodies.
… Excellent musicians who happened to play trumpet.
The Verve Master Edition series includes two great Clifford Brown releases: "Clifford Brown with Strings" and "Clifford Brown and Max Roach". The first has some really nice ballad playing, and the second is a Boppish classic featuring several jazz standards ("Joy Spring", "Jordu", Parisian Thoroughfare", "Daahoud").
Lee Morgan had several releases under his own name, and he was on some of Max Roach's Jazz Messenger albums.
