By luck, and not by design, I actually did drive through the city with the windows open, playing Wagner. Of course, the cap was pulled down and I was wearing dark glasses. After a mid-day paddling trip on the local river, I loaded the boat on the van and headed for home, taking the direct, downtown route. Because PBS was broadcasting "Das Rheingold", and the temperature was in the low 70's (F), I had the windows rolled down as Mime explained to Loge what was happening in the caverns.
Is my reputation shot, or can I show my face in public again? I think I may have to go out tomorrow and drive around with some rap/rock music playing, or at least a sports talk radio show.
BTW, I liked the vocals better in this performance than the Von Karajan/Berliner LPs. Maybe it was due to the fact that it was an actual performance rather than a studio recording, but it seemed more animated and lively. Can't really comment on or compare the quality of the singers or the music, though I did think the anvils sounded better on the radio perfomance.
