It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Why does it take some bands so long to release a new album?

I read periodically that such-and-such rock band is finally releasing
a new album, how it's taken them x years or months to record and mix it.

What?? Why??

A competent group of jazz musicians can go into a studio, charts at the
ready, and record those charts in a few hours in many cases, or in just
a couple of days at most. Hell, I remember reading a story about
drummer Jake Hanna renting a studio for a couple of days, got his project
recorded in less than one, and the studio owner said he'd never rent
to JH again because JH and the boys did their work too quickly!

So why can't rock bands work quickly and efficiently in the studio?
Is it drugs/booze? Or musical incompetence?
