In the case of my favorite band - Los Lobos - I suspect it's that they are a working, touring band and that all the members have interests
and projects outside of the band as well. Plus family and lives that need a bit of... input. So, a LL record every 2-3 years is the best
that can be expected at this point, and as frustrating as that may be, it's completely understandable from a bunch of guys that are so active and productive in general.
Who know with other bands and artists? Things are certainly different now than in the 50's and 60's when Sonny Rollins could record 6 (GREAT!) LPs a year or
Hendrix his entire catalog in four years and leave enough live material to feed his family for 100 years.
The business end has changed as there's MUCH more competition for "entertainment" bucks, so labels are tighter with budgets.
There are less clubs to play at to help promote sales, and people are living longer, so maybe that has affected the creative process for artists!
I seriously doubt booze and drug problems are any worse than they ever have been in hampering the creative process and I'd wager musicians are as
competent as ever. I also think there's a lot going on out there, but it's a more specialized market these days, not dependent on the big labels and a much more
grassroots type operation, so the listener/fan has to put a bit more effort into seeking out recordings and such instead of walking into Tower and there it is!
The whole business paradigm has just shifted and it is what it is...
