Peter Maag's analogue version is a fine recording of an excellent, exciting performance. The Hebrides is quite a wonderful work. I trust the enquirer knows it is a relatively short work, usually called an 'overture,' though it is not an overture "to" something.I believe there was a Decca CD coupled with his performance of the Scotch Symphony, which is equally terrific. The Penguin Guide gave it **(*), but I have never been one to slavishly follow that guide, valuable though it is. I actually have both works on an LP, but the PG says the CD reissue's sound is very good. You cannot go wrong with it, even though he recorded it again.
Maag has a digital recording of the Hebrides and the Scotch Symphony on the Conifer label, and this rated *** in the PG. This might be an even better bet, but I have never heard it.
