I really do think all the "gimmicks" work in this ring production. They add to the atmosphere rather than detract from it. Similarly the ballet-dance adds to "Orpheus & Eurydice" as just posted. However I'm still scratching the few remaining hairs to understand some of the staging in it - arms protruding from the wall, bodies suspended from the ceiling. I'll overlook that nonsense because the rest of it is so good. Maybe someone more artistically intellignt than me can explain their significance?
Similarly some aspects of other excellent productions can be spoiled by completely unecessary gimmicks. Here I'm thinking of the otherwise excellent "Guilius Caesar" where Caesar had a gun at one stage and there was a projection of modern battleships in the background at one stage.
I'm trying to not be a "conventional" stick in the mud. but it gets hard at times!
