..... until I watched a few DVDs of operas that had interesting stories, good staging, and decent technical quality. After all, opera is theater in which the story unfolds in music and song and often dance as well rather than spoken dialog. The resplendent sets, the engaging story and the beautiful music can combine to create a completely different experience.
I still cannot stand to listen to opera on CD or radio or whatever. And the story lines or style of music of some operas just don't appeal to me. But combine the glorious music of Rimsky-Korsakov, the fun fantasy stories, the dance and song elements, and I can really enjoy *watching* the opera. Same for Aida, The Magic Flute, La Cenerentolla, etc.
As for old willie, that nasal honking lasts about 5 seconds in my house. I like a lot of pop/rock/jazz vocalists, but have never understood the appeal of the willie.
One thing that still turns my stomach, though, is those obese singers. Totally gross and nauseating. The whole idea of a 300 lb 45 year old woman portraying Julliette or a 300 lb tenor playing a starving character is just disgusting and unbelieveable. I applaud directors who are beginning to fire (or refusing to hire) obese singers for roles that are obviously unsuited to them as characters.
