There's nothing worse than bad opera. Unsteady, off-pitch singing is complaint number one from newbies, followed by ridiculous plots, risible costumes, wooden acting, inadequate staging (or no staging like Bayreuth). the list goes on. Just awful.
There's nothing better than good opera. Some emotions are so strong words fail, so setting to melody ennobles and strengthens them. Timeless stories of jealousy, intrigue, murder, and thwarted romance. Add majestic scenery, a full-throated chorus commenting on the action, and above all, great solo singing and vocal acting and the listener is simply overwhelmed. Modern provision of supertitles make the goings-on comprehensible despite the language barrier.
My first was "Wozzeck" with Mack Harrell under Mitropoulos: mesmerizing, unspeakably tragic, oh so human. I'm hooked.
