I tend to be a fan of swing and early bebop, so with that in mind:
1. The Decca recordings by the Count Basie band.
2. Benny Goodman - 1938 Carniege Hall Concert
3. Charlie Parker - the Savoy and Dial recordings
4. Art Tatum - almost anything recording will do
5. Duke Ellington - almost anything will do.
6. Billie Holiday - the Columbia/Sony stuff is the best, the Verve
sides where she is backed by Ben Webster and Harry Edison also
great.I could go on and on. Happy exploring. You have a long and interesting
(and sometimes frustrating) journey in front of you. Enjoy!
