Probably my favorite recording of the "Trout" is with Immerseel (fp), Beths (violin), Kussmaul (viola), Bylsma (cello) and Danilow (db) on period instruments. The use of the fortepiano overhauls the balance you're used to hearing. It's smaller sound allows the keyboard to be an equal with the other instruments instead of the leader by virtue of being the loudest instrument, which is a characteristic of all of Schubert's chamber music with keyboard (that the keyboard is an equal), especially compared to most other composers (it's one of the things that makes his chamber music unique). Playing is excellent.Another favorite is with R. Serkin, Julius Levine and others on Sony.
