Good humour in your point, but I largely tend to support Clark.Old recordings (inevitably in mono for technical reasons) bear witness of an era where typically just a few musicians were offered the honour/luxury of being recorded. Many of them conveyed into those recordings the experience of performing a certain work hundreds if not thousands of times. So it is no surprise that we may find in certain old-time recordings something that is missing in (technically much better) recordings by present-day artists.
Just by way of reference I learnt that when hired for the Municipal Orchestra here in Turin (in 1898, if I am not wrong, that was the springboard to fame for him) Toscanini had already more than 1,500 (one thousand) opera conducting events behind him. This is not surprising if one considers that in those times operas were frequently performed even three times a day (matinée, afternoon, and soirée).
Similarly, how many Walkyries had Bruno Walter conducted before his (unfortunately incomplete) Vienna Recording? And how much live Beethoven for Schnabel?
And by contrast, how many Violettas has Ms.Netrebko (I am referring to her with sympathy, with no intended criticism) so far sung, while already being hailed as the new Calls?
L.
