It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Nice post. The whole issue of HIP ...

and the use of period or modern instruments is facinating. Bottom line, I see it as additive to our experience anytime we hear a alternative musical interpertation.

I have found many interesting piano transcriptions as well as symphony's that have been slimmed down by orchestral size, although I must admit I'm really not too fond of original instruments yet. I'm sure Brahms won't roll over in his grave because of Mackerras, whose performances I thououghly enjoy. I must admit though, I don't think I'm up to Mahler 6 with reduced forces.

As a matter of interest I picked up some HIP Wagner overtures and preludes which included original instruments and orchestral size and volumes which were consistent with Wagners original conception. Very different and its interesting to hear the original horns and wind instruments, but since I was brought up with large forces and modern instruments I didn't find it much beyond interestingt. But, and this is my central point, I'm not any poorer for the experience, it was educational. (Barry Wordsworth & The New Queens Hall Orchesta EOS5001)
