"I'm not real sure what 'contemporary jazz' is."Jazz that uses some electric or electronic instruments. Often equated to "smooth jazz," but not necessarily the same thing. ("Contemporary jazz" was once called "cool jazz." Miles Davis was oft the one credited as one of its pioneers.) "Smooth jazz" often lacks the improvisation or free playing that is a normal part of jazz. I mean, I've heard "smooth jazz" that was once R&B and "easy listening" music. Not jazz at all.
I'd call Flim and the BBs and Pat Metheny good examples of "contemporary jazz." Contrast that to Kenny G. and the Rippingtons, which I'd call examples of "smooth jazz" that isn't jazz at all.
There are a lot of purists who think electronic instruments is sacrilege in regard to jazz. I personally think bad jazz is more the musicians' attitude than the instruments utilized.
