Dissatisfied with Tony Bennett, even with Bill Evans, I gave some other vocalists a whirl in But Beautiful. Like Days of Wine and Roses it's a lovely lyric when sung with sensitivity and not just tossed off, as is the case with some singers. So I liked Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday - they had true feeling.

And then I came across Shirley Horn, who sings it very, very slowly. And it turns out to be......well, beautiful.
