I don't totally agree with this premise. I think it is probably distortion that is bothering Dave. Distortion that is coloring those upper frequencies. I've found that as I've removed audible distortion, I can listen louder. Ameliorating those high frequency distortions with EQ/coloration allows Dave to play a bit louder. In my experience most high frequency distortions seems to be time/phase based, not EQ based. A high frequencies that arrives too soon or too late will stand apart from the music, sounding bright. The issue is that most systems today have a lot of distortion in these areas IMHO.
