Until your revelation, I never even realized there was a **tangible** variance in "peak/clipping thresholds" amongst CD players.....
I always thought peaks (max data values upon conversion) on the CD media, numerically speaking, were *exactly* equal to the max input data level of the playback (16 bit media to a 16 bit input), where clipping was simply a matter of consecutive samples of max value, as seen from both the CD and the DAC input..... With the only variance being the maximum calculated intersample peak levels, which often exceed the max level of the raw 16-bit data.
I also think that "extrapolation" (restoring peaks that were digitally clipped on the media) has been a technological oversight, in the evolution of digital playback design. (But then again, such technology would have likely made the "loudness wars" even worse.)
