I saw the citation on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication".... I heard a live (maybe even bootleg) version of this song, and by the crowd noise, the feed was of very good quality, but the sound from the band was just like the studio version. "Loud and compressed" is the only way they can present their music. Also note that for how "hot" a lot of recordings are, half of the problem is that most consumer playback products lack linearity, making recordings sound "hotter" than they actually are.
The author isn't even aware of the "pitch correction" that has engulfed the music industry, which basically makes every vocalist sound generic.... Devoid of character.
This leads to another issue- How good would a lot of these artists sound if the processing is taken away? I'm not going to speculate, but I do think the scarcity of "non-overprocessed" pop and rock productions today is alarming, if not embarrassing.
