When I come across something I consider beautiful, it washes over me whether I'm distracted or not. I may not have time to bask in beauty, but I am aware that it's there. The problem with the commuters in question is twofold. There are those that just could not perceive nor appreciate the beauty inherent in the music, and the rest did not or could not slow down to smell the roses, so to speak. The problem here is the venue. Most commuters do not have time for art appreciation. But choose a spot where people congregate by choice and not by necessity, and the outcome would be very different. This whole excercise is futile because the choice of venue is flawed. It tells you nothing about the general public's predilection for classical music.
