Re: Imagine that you are an elderly man and your wife told you,"you want audio gear? Go out and buy it,"

I don't have to imagine I'm elderly - I am. Or rather, in the years of mature wisdom. And I don't have to imagine my wife saying this - she did - after seeing me pathetically lusting at a VPI Scout in a dealer's display.

But I didn't take her up on it (yet, anyway). Instead I spent about a quarter of the cost of the Scout upgrading the arm and cartridge on my 24 year-old AR Legend tt (to Michell TecnoArm/OC9).

The "surplus" funds are going to be used travelling the 24,000 miles from New Zealand to the UK and return, and taking in concerts at the Edinburgh Festival and the London Proms later this year. It is a myth that the Scots and those of Scottish heritage are mean with money. We are simply more careful.

And when the AR is eventually retired it goes free to my daughter and son-in-law, whose extortionate mortgage repayments condemn them to an i-pod at present. They've got plenty of records of what they regard as music, and they deserve to hear them.
