"You could be dead tomorrow, what are you saving your money for? Deadbeat relatives?"Would you be tempted? What would you be looking to buy?
Assuming you already have 3 systems in 3 separate rooms, what would you do with the stuff you already have?
Follow Ups:
I don't have to imagine I'm elderly - I am. Or rather, in the years of mature wisdom. And I don't have to imagine my wife saying this - she did - after seeing me pathetically lusting at a VPI Scout in a dealer's display. But I didn't take her up on it (yet, anyway). Instead I spent about a quarter of the cost of the Scout upgrading the arm and cartridge on my 24 year-old AR Legend tt (to Michell TecnoArm/OC9).
The "surplus" funds are going to be used travelling the 24,000 miles from New Zealand to the UK and return, and taking in concerts at the Edinburgh Festival and the London Proms later this year. It is a myth that the Scots and those of Scottish heritage are mean with money. We are simply more careful.
And when the AR is eventually retired it goes free to my daughter and son-in-law, whose extortionate mortgage repayments condemn them to an i-pod at present. They've got plenty of records of what they regard as music, and they deserve to hear them.
.........…Tempted by what? I’d have everything I wanted. I buy what I want now so I can’t imagine that will change when I’m old.Smile
Maybe she said "undie wear" not "audio gear" and if the hearing is going, well that's another issue entirely.
since (and I know Jim W. is tired of this story) she let me drill holes in her hardwood floor to accommodate runs of Fulton Gold (you know, the stuff they suspend the Golden Gate Bridge with) from my speakers to the closet she gave up so I could house my source and amp components in it way back when...before I even proposed.I'd give the stuff I already have to my kids--if they'd want it. I'm sure in any event that my two grandkids would be ready takers.
She was jealous about everthing really. If I paid too much attention to anything, she would consider it some kind of threat.
I do have systems in three rooms. I like to have music wherever I go, although I do not have an IPOD. I only listen to AM talk radio in the car.
If it was me I'd keep what I have, but I would get a kick ass tt or two to replace my steel wheels. I'd buy a fancy Lyra. An expensive cartridge has always been something I could not justify (diminishing returns)
I'd get a EMM cd player and call it a day. I don't allocate much to digital as I once did.
My ex (#2 to be exact)and I went to listen to these funny looking speakers called Magnaplainers several years back. This was the first tube system I'd ever heard, and also the first good turntable I'd ever seen. The sales person apologised for for the amps he was using
(solid state Brystons), but the system blew me away. But I wanted the turn table! Well we listened to three or four LP's, and I knew my turn table was history when I left! On the way home she asked me if I was going to buy those speakers, and I said "I don't know." She bugged for almost a year to go and buy them! (more community property!!) Later I ask her what she thought about the Conrad Johnson preamp and the tubes. Got no response.
gary
She did not want any of my gear. She hated it. Thank God for that.
She took the family room system which was hers. A Denon integrated, little AR speakers and a Technics multi-disc changer.
Later she blew up the amp by shorting the speaker leads somehow. She sold it all on ebay, broken and all.
...pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
Buy her some flowers to show her she's appreciated! Maybe dinner too. Then I'd take a good look at things. There's almost always some piece of gear we'd like to upgrade ;^) .
... decide on a room and go from there. I would buy used and try out a bunch of stuff, selling what did not work well. Speakers would probably be the thing I would buy new due to size and cost of shipping as well as the chance to audition to get something you really like. Have fun!
Of course I'd be tempted but there isn't enough information in your post to say much beyond that. What are the three existing systems like? Any other competing demands for your disposable income? Charitable giving?
Do you have at least one really good room with dedicated outlets and some acoustical treatments?
If you you know a younger music lover with limited funds I would consider giving away a system.
Nice thought! And perhaps the person who recently lost their job, or the single mom who struggles to put the evening meal on the table, ... . Lots of people in various situations who could use some good music and who also might take to our 'hobby'.
chickenlogic sponsored an equipment and media drive here at the Asylum some time back for their benefit. I'll write chickenlogic and see if he can provide an update on how they're enjoying their music.
They're doing great. While not total vinyl heads, the old black wax keeps spinning. Leaning towards folky and country rock stuff lately like Loudon Wainwright and Steve Earle.Hazel's into Dora the Explorer as well, of course, as she just turned five....
