I think this is true of a lot of gear too, though that may be ultimately what you're getting at. I've heard (owned) some pieces of gear that on good recordings were spectacular at taking the music apart, fewer than could get it back together. Extraordinary detail from top to bottom is not what we hear from a live performance, though presumably it's all there. We hear a forest of trees. Getting the forest right is a lot harder than getting the trees, since it involves a designer's ears as well as his brain.
