You are astonishing me. In audio everything matters, or so goes the saying. How do you know that playback distortion does not matter, could you rule it out in appropriate experiments ? In order to be sure that it's not distortion that makes polarity inversion audible, as Shanefield suggests, you should check it out. Perhaps it is and all your 99% confidence results are worthless.

Polarity is readily heard on my system, as well as on every system I've been able to lay my hands on.<If you minimum phase speakers behave like my speakers in the minimum phase mode they are not coherent (want to see the diagrams ?). In which case incoherence makes polarity audible. You didn't rule out distortion. The question remains open.

Literature like IEEE and JASA is of little use given the signals these guys are using : who cares about clicks and pops and noise and things ? We are listening to music.

Because on my coherent, low distortion speakers I can't hear it. Perhaps I should try and use those little B&W's which are sleeping in a cupboard upstairs, I've still got an old Luxman amp, and possibly I can find some speaker wire somewhere.
