Not really a motorcycle guy, but have lots of friends that are, both Harley and others.Based on what I can tell, Harley is kind of like tweaky hi-end audio. Part of the charm is the constant need for tinkering, tuning, etc. And all my friends with Harleys have pre-AMF production. High quality and reliability were never hallmarks of the Harley name based on what I have heard at least not on how I make quality judgements. Harley goes beyond these things and that is why you buy one. Not picking on Harley, but quality and good old American values are generally at odds with each other.
OTOH, if you just want to have fun on a bike without all the temperament of the Harley, my friends tell me to go Japanese.
