Gotta be a little careful there.the same instrument can sound wildly different in different venues, different perspectives (i.e. when you're playing it vs. when you're listening to a friend playing it)
Musicians have to play their instrument and also hear their instrument being played from a multitude of venues and listening distances/positions to have a full understanding of the nature of their instrument.
On the issue of perspective - this is again important and we need to be a little careful, as unless we are present in the recording session, we can't 'prove' the event of the recording (i.e. what EXACTLY happens) so it's not always up to the musician to accurately nail down what is 'right' or 'wrong'. A more informed opinion (i.e. how can instument X radiate sound like that?? - or something along that line..) can be formed in a hifi audition......
just my opinions
