My sister-in-law used to play harp for the Atlanta Symphony. She got fired after she told Robert Shaw that if he was going to be a conductor, it would be nice if he learned how to read music...yeah, she's a smartass. (An unemployed smartass...not a hell of a lot of harpist gigs.) But anyhow...She has never been an audiophile, and when she first heard my system her reaction was underwhelming. She acknowledged that it sounded "better" than her rack system. Said that she "liked" it. But that it really didn't make any difference, since all that any stereo could do is "remind you of the music." Her point was, to paraphrase, that reproduced music is like the print in a book. Just ink and paper. What it does is allow you to create the story in your head. The difference between a poor and a great stereo is no more significant than the difference between slightly blurred print in a book, vs. very clear print. The art still happens in your head.
Presented here for what it's worth...
By the way, she also told me that she had a hard time relating to music "from the front, instead of in the middle." Again, for what it's worth.
