Based on conjecture, and the comments made in The Absolute Sound issue 142 page 109 and 110, the is probably answer is a big fat "NO", the GamuT is NOT as "good" as these players since all of the players you mention are not as neutral as the GamuT. Aside from conjecture however, in my experience the GamuT does not have an overblown digital sounding bass, has a very fluid and pure midrange, and actually has a very extended and wonderful treble. In this sense it IS very neutral. Most of the players you mentioned will accentuate the bass, some the upper midrange, and some will roll-off the treble, or do a mixture of all three to some degree for example. This is actually a good thing if you want to find an player to round out and match up with your system and tatses, say if you do not like treble sparkle for instance. What confuses me though is that you have two very neutral components (Quad and placette), and seem to value neutrality (if not, then why the Placette?). I would say stop A/B'ing the GamuT with other players and just absorb what the GamuT does so wonderfully. I think you will discover the light. It took me awhile, but man is it worth it. What is the light, well see page 101 of the same TAS issue. I feel the GamuT has a lot of virtues, and I would describe it's sound just as Mr Valin describes the sound for the Goldmund DAC on p101.
2) You might want to consider a TVC passive if you feel like you are losing dynamics with the Placette at low volumes. I have been looking into using a passive pre, and from your comments I am going to strongly consider going with the Bent TVC passive based on your experiences. One of the heresay about resistor based passive is this phenomenon, true or not.
