Re: High End CD players that don't need pre-amp

Just about all CD Players or DAC's are capable of driving nearly all poweramps into clipping without the need to add an extra gain stage such as a preamp, but to attenuate the volume if the cd or dac does not have a varible output, a passive preamp is the only way to go, but proper impedence maching is mandatory here, the output of the cd player or dac must be lower than say <50ohms the passive volume control should be 5K to 10K series/shunt, the imput impedence of the poweramp (this is the major one) should be higher than say >80k.
If you have all these impedences sorted out you will get the best out of your passive control. I've been doing this now for many years, and it's fact that you do not need preamps in a digital sourced audio system. Please read here for a insight to all this.

People who dismiss passive volume control have nearly never set them up properly to the impedence matching parameters I've outlined above, they've usually bunged them in had a bad match problem they don't know about and then dissmissed the passive as weak bass, no dynamics, or no highs. If they heard it in a matched enviroment they would quickly do a turn around.
